Georgia MacPherson takes us through the music that's been keeping her sane this week in lockdown:
1. Arlo Parks – Eugene (Single)
February 11, 2019

This single is not that recent, but worth mentioning because it is just too good to leave out. Only 19, poet and singer Arlo Parks has been on many people’s one to watch list since her first single “Cola” in 2018. “Eugene” shows her skill as a storyteller, with Parks creating a heart-breaking tender and confessional song narrating unrequited love. With Earl Sweatshirt and Portishead as inspirations, smooth vocals reminiscent of Jorja Smith and the sensitivity of Loyle Carner, when Park’s first album does come out, I’m sure it will be met with wide acclaim.
2. Laura Marling – Song for Our Daughter (Album)
April 10, 2020
Laura Marling’s experience in the music industry really shows in her seventh album. Rising during the British indie folk boom with the likes of Mumford and Sons, the richness of Marling’s storytelling has meant that she has risen above the movement, her sound proving timeless through the decades. The album is humble and witty, with Marling showing wisdom beyond her years throughout the 10 tracks as always. Choosing to release the album early to provide entertainment during these uncertain times, we are very lucky to have Marling’s comforting vocals in our lives.
3. Mahalia – Isolation Tapes (EP)
May 1, 2020

Mahalia welcomed her 22nd birthday with the surprise release of this EP. Despite the first track, “BRB”, describing her sadness leaving her partner to go on tour, it seems fitting at a time when many of us are separated from our loved ones, not knowing when we’ll see each other again. Featuring Mahalia’s signature new wave R&B sound and candid lyrics, this birthday surprise is a present for all who those who listen.
4. Serpentwithfeet – Apparition (EP)
April 29, 2020
This avant-garde vocalist and performance artist is sure to soothe any listener with his ethereal harmonies. Led by his recent single “A Comma”, which wouldn’t sound out of place in a moody crime drama, this intimate three track EP produced by Janelle Monáe and Wynee Bennett is perfect for any fan of Björk and fans of queer electronic pop.
5. James Blake – You’re Too Precious (Single)
April 24, 2020
“You’re Too Precious” is as romantic as the title suggests. Enchanting yet mellow, the single is a beautiful tribute to a partner during quarantine, with Blake writing this at 4 AM, explaining its dream-like quality. The looped electronic vocals slide perfectly into the sensitive vocals showcasing not only Blake’s aptitude as a producer but his skill as a singer-songwriter as well.
6. Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes – What Kind of Music (Album)
April 24, 2020

A collaboration between two of the most exciting members of the UK’s booming contemporary jazz scene, experimental drummer Yussef Daves and electro-soul multi-instrumentalist Tom Misch create a smooth, cohesive album. Fusing acid jazz, hip hop and electronica, this debut album from the pair is an impressive showcase of their musical talents without sounding too busy. Instead the album transports the listener to siting in the park on a dusky summer evening, something we all need when we’re cooped up at home.
